The Jaguar D-Type (1954) is one of the most
iconic and successful race cars ever built. Jaguar designed the D-Type
with the sole purpose of winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and it
accomplished that aim brilliantly with victories in 1955, 1956, and 1957. The
D-Type's revolutionary design incorporated monocoque construction and
aerodynamics that made it faster and more stable at high
speeds than its predecessors. Its 3.4-litre inline-six engine produced
around 250bhp, allowing the D-Type to exceed 170mph on the Mulsanne
Straight.
One of the D-Type's most distinctive features is its fin, which rises
from behind the driver's head to provide additional stability at speed.
The low body, and sleek lines with the dark green livery make it a
standout specimen in any racing car collection. On the track, the D-Type was virtually
unbeatable, thanks to its cutting-edge technology and relentless pursuit
of speed. Today, it's one of the most coveted and valuable classic racing
cars in the world, with a D-Type selling in 2016 for over £16 million!
