"Lotus Esprit Turbo Essex" (1980)
The Lotus Esprit Turbo "Essex" was a special edition model
offered in 1980 showcasing the performance capabilities of the Esprit with a
turbocharged engine and striking Essex Petroleum livery. Cloaked in blue
with red and chrome side stripes, the Essex Esprit was as much a statement of
luxury as it was of speed. The turbocharged 2.2-litre engine produced
210bhp giving this mid-engine sports car thrilling
performance with its lightweight bodywork. The angular design penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro captured
the futuristic spirit of the time, and the car's connection to Essex
Petroleum a company that sponsored the Lotus Formula 1 efforts added to its
exclusivity. Limited in its production figures, the Esprit Turbo "Essex" is a
highly collectible symbol of the turbo era, blending Lotus racing expertise
with road-going performance.
