number 39, competed alongside its sister UK car at the 1996 24 Hours of Le Mans.
This patriotic nod to America was more than just eye-catching,
it showcased the international appeal of McLaren's ultimate road-racing
machine. It was powered by was the same monstrous BMW V12 engine which
gave the car blistering performance on the race circuit. In
the capable hands of Nelson Piquet, Danny Sullivan, and Johnny Cecotto,
the #39 McLaren GTR pushed the
limits of what a production-based car could achieve in one of the
most prestigious races in the world.
